What is Laachi?

Laachi is a year-long multimedia project by Kahanee that explores what belonging in Canada means to different communities across Manitoba. Why the word Laachi? Laachi means cardamom in Punjabi. Because food is magic, we wanted to name this initiative after a spice which when cared for, nurtured for, and used with love, brings warmth and connection.

Why We’re Doing This

Winnipeg is one of Canada’s most diverse cities, yet many people still feel disconnected. Laachi aims to create small, welcoming spaces where people can share who they are, express themselves in many ways, and feel seen, heard, and understood.

How It Works

What Happens at Each Event

Each gathering features guest artists, authors, or community leaders who share their stories, followed by open creative circles where attendees would engage in guided reflections on their own experiences using the creative expression form shared by the artists. All events will be open to (and encourage active participation and engagement of youth of all ages.
